A paired group of conductor autographs featuring Leopold Stokowski and Arthur Nikisch.
The first is a fully endorsed Bank of America check, dated November 29, 1943, Beverly Hills, California, payable to the Screen Writers Guild in the amount of $2.00 and signed by Leopold Stokowski. The check bears bank processing stamps on the verso dated December 1943 and reflects Stokowski’s Hollywood-era activity during his prominent work in film and recording. Measuring 8.25" x 3". Check is clean and intact with strong, clear signature.
Accompanying it is a signed photographic postcard of Arthur Nikisch, bearing his bold autograph across the lower portion of the image. The postcard features a formal studio portrait and is printed in Berlin, with the reverse showing publisher information for Breitkopf & Härtel of London. Nikisch, one of the most influential conductors of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was closely associated with the Berlin Philharmonic and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Measuring 3.25" x 5.25". The postcard has a bold autograph, light surface wear, and minor edge wear consistent with age.
Leopold Stokowski (18 April 1882 – 13 September 1977) was a British conductor. One of the leading conductors of the early and mid-20th century, he is best known for his long association with the Philadelphia Orchestra. He was especially noted for his free-hand conducting style that spurned the traditional baton and for obtaining a characteristic sound from the orchestras he directed.
Arthur Nikisch (12 October 1855 – 23 January 1922) was a Hungarian conductor who performed internationally, holding posts in Boston, London, Leipzig and—most importantly—Berlin. He was considered an outstanding interpreter of the music of Bruckner, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven and Liszt. Johannes Brahms praised Nikisch's performance of his Fourth Symphony as "quite exemplary, it's impossible to hear it any better."
