MONROE, JAMES. President. ALS as president from Oak Hill June 2, 1820. Re his fatigue from his trip due to the badness of the roads, plans for house and yard work, etc... 7.75x6.75, part:
"We arrived here in good health but much fatigued by the badness of the roads.
Intending to proceed to Albermarle & some workmen (slaves] being engaged about the
house & in the yard, we have resolved to proœed next week..
*.Many surviving letters from early America make similar reference to
"badness of roads" & resulting exhaustion, amazingly Monroe's journey was only from
Washington to Charlottesville VA. (less than two hours today!),
