Autograph Letter Signed James Buchanan as U.S. Senator, dated from Washington, April 14, 1841, to Richard Smith, Esq. An uncommon letter from a future president where he talks about a servant (of color) who has $1051 in treasury notes. In part "...the bearer, Richard Posey (of color) has now $1051 in Treasury notes...please deposit them...He is an excellent & honest servant & deserves encouragement in his economy", one sheet, 10 in. x 8 in.Does have some staining on letter, but clearly written with bold ink and does not effect Buchanan's autograph.
