James Abram Garfield:DS Sept. 5, 1857; a fascinating little document 7 ½ x 5” on which Garfield and another individual state for the Board of School Examiners of Portage County that they have publicly examined Mr. I. M. Palmer and found him to be of good moral character and qualified to teach various named subjects. Garfield was an educator – an instructor in classical languages and a school principal.
