Autograph letter signed “Howard Chandler Christy,” three pages on two 5" x 7.75" sheets, Duncan Falls, Ohio, n.d. Christy writes regarding a proposed monument to the artist Frederic Remington, suggesting that fellow illustrators and painters might contribute toward its erection: “It occurs to me that many illustrators and painters would be much gratified if they could contribute something toward this monument… Personally, I should greatly appreciate the privilege of being included in the number.” Signed at the conclusion, “Howard Chandler Christy.”
A fine content letter linking one celebrated American illustrator to another, as Christy expresses admiration for Frederic Remington’s legacy and the idea of a memorial in his honor. Light toning, folds, otherwise fine condition.
Howard Chandler Christy (January 10, 1872 – March 3, 1952) was an American artist and illustrator. Famous for the "Christy Girl" – a colorful and illustrious successor to the "Gibson Girl" – Christy is also widely known for his iconic WWI military recruitment and Liberty loan posters, along with his 1940 masterpiece titled, Scene at the Signing of the Constitution of the United States, which is installed along the east stairwell of the United States Capitol.
