Henry Smith Williams Signed Photograph. Vintage sepia-toned photographic portrait by the noted photographer Heath J. Haviland, signed in the lower margin, “Henry Smith Williams.” The composed seated portrait depicts the American physician, author, and historian wearing spectacles and formal attire, resting one hand on the back of a chair. The studio imprint “Heath J. Haviland” appears at lower left, with the address “7a, Elm Tree Road, St. John’s Wood” printed at lower right. Photograph measures approximately 7" x 9" and is mounted to a larger studio mount measuring approximately 10" x 12".
Henry Smith Williams (1863–1943) was an American physician, historian, and prolific author best known for his multi-volume historical works and scientific writings. Trained as a medical doctor, he later devoted much of his career to writing and editing major reference works, including The Historian’s History of the World (1904–1908), an influential 25-volume collaborative history. Williams also wrote extensively on science and medicine, helping popularize scientific knowledge for a broader audience during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
