Warner Bros. contract actress (1917–1945), called “the luckiest girl in Hollywood” at the height of her sudden rise to stardom. Signed in blue ink in a bold, flowing hand: “Sincerely, Gloria Dickson.” The photograph is an exceptionally large-format studio glamour portrait, approximately 8 × 10 inches, depicting Dickson in a beautifully composed pose amid bamboo props, her platinum-blonde curls and radiant smile characteristic of Warner Bros.’ late-1930s promotional style. The photography and lighting are of the highest studio quality. Some light surface wear and a small crease at top; signature sharp, ink vivid. Very Good to Fine condition overall.
Born Thais Alalia Dickerson in Pocatello, Idaho, Dickson was spotted in 1936 by Warner Bros. talent scout Max Arnow while performing in a Federal Theatre Project production. Signed immediately, she was given the leading role in her very first film — They Won’t Forget (1937), directed by Mervyn LeRoy — a distinction extraordinarily rare for any newcomer. The film was a critical sensation and Dickson’s performance earned rapturous notices, landing her on the covers of major fan magazines throughout autumn 1937 under headlines such as “The Luckiest Girl in the World” and “New Star of the Year.” She followed with strong supporting roles in Gold Diggers in Paris (1938), They Made Me a Criminal (1939) with John Garfield, The Oklahoma Kid (1939) with James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart, and Invisible Stripes (1939), also with Bogart. She was briefly married to legendary Hollywood makeup artist Perc Westmore.
Dickson died tragically in a house fire on April 10, 1945, at only 27 years of age — cutting short a career that had promised far more. She is buried at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Her early death, combined with her meteoric rise and the genuine quality of her performances, have made her a subject of enduring fascination among Golden Age Hollywood collectors. Signed photographs of Dickson are scarce on the market; a large-format studio portrait of this quality is an exceptional find.
