Frederic Remington (1861-1909), the defining visual chronicler of the American West whose paintings and bronzes remain icons of frontier mythology, fires off a terse and thoroughly in-character note to a "Thomas" from his New Rochelle, New York address. The ALS reads in full: "My dear Thomas — The Lambs keep assessing me for $12.50 — but since I am not a member & never was I dont propose to pay it — will you kindly call the treasurer off. Sorry you cant come. / Yours faithfully / Frederic Remington / New Rochelle. N.Y."
The Lambs, founded in 1874, was New York's celebrated theatrical club; Remington's flat denial of membership and refusal to pay is delivered with the same directness that characterizes his best artistic work. Remington died in December 1909 at just 48; letters in his hand are genuinely scarce.
ALS, one page, black ink, approximately 8 x 10 inches, undated; return address "New Rochelle. N.Y." at foot (IMG_190.jpg). Light toning; paper sound; overall very good condition. Estimate: $2,500-$4,000.
