Edward Dowden (1843–1913) was one of the most influential literary critics of the late Victorian era and served as Professor of English Literature at Trinity College Dublin. He is best remembered for his pioneering study Shakspere: A Critical Study of His Mind and Art (1875), which helped shape modern interpretations of Shakespeare’s development as a dramatist. Dowden also wrote extensively on Percy Bysshe Shelley and other Romantic writers, helping establish English literature as a serious academic discipline.
