Autograph letter signed “M. R. Waite” as Chief Justice of the United States, dated December 13, 1874, from Washington, D.C. Addressed to Dr. T. G. Cushing, Waite expresses relief at the recipient’s recovery from a recent illness and hopes for his early resumption of work.
Written on a single sheet measuring 4.25" x 7". Waite had been appointed Chief Justice earlier that same year by President Ulysses S. Grant, adding special significance to this early example of his correspondence from the beginning of his tenure on the Supreme Court.
Light toning and a vertical fold with a small tear at the lower margin, otherwise well-preserved with a strong signature.
