Camille Corot (1796-1875), the beloved French landscape painter whose poetic vision of nature bridged Neoclassicism and Impressionism, writes to his colleague Auguste Rousseau. The ALS, dated Paris, 26 October 1869, reads in full: "Cher monsieur / Serez vous assez bon pour confier a mon ami M. Vernier, qui doit faire une lithographie d'apres la [votre?] pour quelque jours seulement / Recevez monsieur [mes] assurances de ma Consideration / C. Corot." The envelope is addressed in Corot's hand: "A Monsieur Aug. Rousseau / possesseur d'une riche collection de Tableaux." The typed dealer slip identifies the piece as "ALS to Rousseau 1 page in-12, Paris, 26 October 1869, WITH ENVELOPE." The letter dates to the final years of Corot's life, when his fame was at its peak. A letter to a named collector concerning a lithographic reproduction of one of Rousseau's own paintings is a document with layers of provenance and art-world significance. ALS, one page, black ink, approximately 4.5 x 5.5 inches, dated Paris 26 October 1869 (IMG_194.jpg); original mailing envelope (IMG_195.jpg); typed dealer description slip (IMG_196.jpg). Letter and envelope toned; paper sound; overall good to very good condition. Estimate: $3,500-$5,500. This item will be accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from One of a Kind Collectibles.
