This 1866 American Express Stock Certificate signed by Wells and Fargo. 12" x 8.5". It is for 1 share and dated December 26th, 1865. It is signed by both founders of the company and countersigned by Treasurer Alex Holland. The graphics are quite outstanding, with a train, roundhouse, ships, delivery wagon, safe, cotton, and crated goods, and a guard dog labeled "Safety & Dispatch." Also, Uncancelled. In otherwise fine condition.
Henry Wells (December 12, 1805 – December 10, 1878) was an American businessman important in the history of both the American Express Company and Wells Fargo & Company. Wells worked as a freight agent before joining the express business. His companies, which were the predecessors of American Express and Wells Fargo, competed with the United States Post Office by carrying mail at less than the government rate.
William Fargo (May 20, 1818 – August 3, 1881) was a pioneer American expressman who helped found the modern-day financial firms of American Express Company and Wells Fargo with his business partner, Henry Wells. He was also the 27th Mayor of Buffalo, serving from 1862 until 1866 during the U.S. Civil War.
