Austrian author was the son of a worker who had moved from Saxony to Austria because of his social- democratic attitude . After 1913, the novel "Erde" ("Earth"), in which Petzold processes his hospital stays, followed the first poems. His most successful book, a stylized portrayal of his childhood and youth, appeared in 1920 under the title "Rough Life." In his lifetime, Petzold was regarded as a working-class poet in his own work, in which he uniquely combined social themes and religious perspectives to mysticism and pantheism.
