Autograph Letter Signed “A. Macedonski,” one page, 8vo, undated, written in Romanian. The celebrated Symbolist poet and literary critic invites the recipient to attend a major artistic and literary festival at the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest. Macedonski explains that, having just completed his “Romanian works in their entirety” and preparing to depart with his family to settle in Paris, he considers it an honor to request the addressee’s presence at the festival. He encloses two tickets for the occasion and closes with expressions of his “highest esteem and consideration.”
An elegant letter reflecting Macedonski’s central role in Romanian literary life at the fin de siècle, and his connection to the Athenaeum—Romania’s foremost cultural landmark. Alexandru Macedonski (1854–1920), often regarded as the founder of Romanian Symbolism and a counterpart to Baudelaire and Mallarmé, was one of the most innovative and controversial figures in 19th-century Romanian literature. Manuscripts and signed letters by Macedonski are scarce, particularly those with such direct references to his artistic mission and his planned relocation to Paris.
