A Rare Signed Work of Stephen Crane, On His Short Story, The Wise Men
Stephen Crane was one of America's great realistic writers, and his works have been credited with marking the beginning of modern American Naturalism. His Civil War novel The Red Badge of Courage (1895) is a classic of American literature that virtually every schoolchild reads. Tragically, Crane died young at the age of 29, and his autograph is extremely uncommon.
In 1898, a limited edition, hard copy book, entitled "The Lanthorn Book," was published for members of the Lanthorn Club in New York. It contained stories from contemporary authors, among them Crane, who contributed his work, "The Wise Men." Only 125 copies were printed, and of those a handful survive. Crane signed them.
Book signed, being an original copy of "The Lanthorn Book," number 52 of 125, internally in wonderful condition, original covers present but loose.
