Partly-printed vellum DS, one page, 12 x 15, April 19, 1809. Desirable military land grant, in part: "In consideration of Military Service, performed by Mathias Phillips, a private three years, to the United States, in the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment... There is granted, by the United States, unto…Mathias Philips a certain Tract of Land containing one hundred acres." Signed at the conclusion by President Madison. A partial paper seal remains affixed at the lower left. In very good to fine condition, with light toning and staining, with small areas of vellum loss.
James Madison Jr. (March 16, 1751 – June 28, 1836) was an American statesman, diplomat, and Founding Father. He served as the fourth president of the United States from 1809 to 1817. Madison is hailed as the "Father of the Constitution" for his pivotal role in drafting and promoting the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights.
