Helen Keller (1880-1968) .American author and lecturer. Lost her sight and hearing, due to illness, at nineteen months. Educated by her loving friend Anne Sullivan Macy. Lectured world-wide on behalf of the blind. TLS, signed in pencil, 1p.4to, Forest Hills, New York, Nov. 24, 1936. Written to a longtime supporter following the death, that death, that year, of Anne Sullivan her friend and teacher of nearly 50 years. “The birds are gone, the life that throbbed through tree, bush and grass is stilled… Even so it is winter in my life since the guardian angel of fifty years no longer walks by my side on earth. Yet I thank God for the wondrous gift. He has withdrawn a little while, and for the difficulties to be overcome that shall be my tribute to Anne Sullivan Macy. Out of the darkness in which she died and I still am living I thank you. O friend, for the joy of lending a helping hand to those whose eyes seek light in vain…” A touching tribute to her old friend.
