Autographed Guest Book from the Washington DC Continental restaurant Paul Young's. Considered one of the finest dining spots in the city before and after WWII, along with the Jockey Club, Sans Souci and Duke's, Young's became a fixture on the DC social scene after hosting private dinners celebrating Pres. Kennedy's inauguration. Autographs from Washington politicos, scientists, royalty and Hollywood celebrities. Guest book in brown contains roughly 200 signatures, May 13, 1937 to Nov. 19, 1941. Most give the name of their home town. Signed twice by Jack Dempsey (both Mar. 3, 1938, but on different leaves). Includes orchestra leader Ben Bernie (“B. Bernie,” Sep. 22, 1938, with small newspaper clipping taped to same leaf related to him being treated for a stomach disorder with “Oct. 6” dateline); Congressman Jerry Voorhis; band leader Abe Lyman. Lionel Stander; Montana Congressman Jerry O’Connell; Robert Briscoe (first Jewish Lord Mayor of Dublin, sgd. From “Eire”); signer Buddy Clark; singer Helen Forrest and Arctic explorer Hubert Wilkins. A few signatures have a notation (“Rep.”) in another hand to indicate that they are a member of the House: Leon Sacks (Philadelphia); John M. Coffee (Tacoma, Wash.) and Thomas A. McGrail (Irwin, Penn., May 14, 1937); and an unidentified House member from Stamford, Conn., Dec. 16, 1937. Signatures in different languages including Hebrew & Japanese. Oblong 8vo. Brown cloth faux leather. Binding is internally slightly weak at Nov. 1937.
