Mercury 7 - Originally belonged to NASA Engineer Cathy Osgood.
Mercury Seven Astronauts: Martin Caidin's The Astronauts Book Signed by All. The Story of Project Mercury, America's Man-in-Space Program. (New York: E. P. Dutton & Co., Inc., 1960), second printing, with dust jacket. Neatly signed on the half-title page by all seven of NASA's original Mercury program astronauts, on separate lines: "Walter M Schirra Jr", "Virgil I. Grissom", "M. Scott Carpenter", "Donald K. Slayton", "Walter M Schirra Jr", "John H. Glenn, Jr.", "Leroy G Cooper Jr", and "Alan B Shepard Jr". Note that Schirra signed twice. Note also the early and desirable full forms of their signatures before shorter versions and nicknames became commonly used. It is signed on the inside front flap: "Cathy Osgood". Catherine T. Osgood began her career at NASA in 1959 as a math aide, or a "computer" (one who provided data analysis with the use of calculators) at a time when very few women worked as engineers for NASA. Osgood, who had a bachelor's degree in mathematics, eventually became an aeronautical engineer at MSC, where she worked on spacecraft rendezvous. She retired in 1959 after fifty years of service. Included are two 7" x 5" photos of her at NASA. Quite desirable with this association. There is some soiling on the back of the dust jacket; the book is in generally fine condition.
