An interesting album dating from the 1850s-1870's with signatures from President U. S. Grant and most of his cabinet as well as quotes by many political, religious, judicial  and literary personalities of the time The 7.5" x 5.5"album is in fair condition and does have some places where a ink had bled through on pages and some water damage.The album also include and original  4" x 2 1/4" CDV image of Grant in uniform. Other than the political signatures, the album is mostly filled with quotes by many political and literary personalities of the time. These quotes are usually against slavery by many of the leading abolitionist of the time. The album has over 28 signatures, some of the political autographs found within the pages are ;President  Ulysses S. Grant, Hamilton Fish, William Worth Belknap, John Andrew Jackson Creswell, Columbus Delano, George Sewall Boutwell, Benjamin Helm Bristow. Some of the judicial, religious and literary include... Salmon P. Chase , Lewis Tappan, Edward Beecher D.D., John Greenleaf Whittier ,John G. Whittier, Richard Dana Jr.

 

Ulysses S. Grant (born Hiram Ulysses Grant; April 27, 1822 – July 23, 1885) was an American soldier and politician who served as the 18th president of the United States from 1869 to 1877. Before his presidency, Grant led the Union Army as Commanding General of the United States Army in winning the American Civil War. As president, Grant worked with the Radical Republicans during Reconstruction to protect blacks and reestablish the public credit, while rebuilding the U.S. Navy, that lagged behind other world power navies, such as Spain.  Signed "U. S . Grant" in purple ink, has bled into paper. Album is accompanied with original period CVD of Grant in Civil war uniform, with reproduced signature below.

 

Hamilton Fish (August 3, 1808 – September 7, 1893) was an American politician who served as the 16th Governor of New York from 1849 to 1850, a United States Senator from New York from 1851 to 1857 and the 26th United States Secretary of State from 1869 to 1877. Fish is recognized as the "pillar" of the presidency of Ulysses S. Grant and considered one of the best U.S. Secretaries of State by scholars, known for his judiciousness and efforts towards reform and diplomatic moderation.[1][2] Fish settled the controversial Alabama Claims with Great Britain through his development of the concept of international arbitration.  Signed and inscribed  "Hamilton Fish Secretary of State dated May 28, 1872"

 

William Worth Belknap (September 22, 1829 – October 12, 1890) was a lawyer, soldier in the Union Army, government administrator in Iowa, and the 30th United States Secretary of War under President Ulysses S. John Andrew Jackson Creswell (November 18, 1828 – December 23, 1891) was an American politician and abolitionist from Maryland, who served as United States Representative, United States Senator, and as Postmaster General of the United States appointed by President Ulysses S. Columbus Delano (June 4, 1809 – October 23, 1896) was a lawyer, rancher, banker, statesman and a member of the prominent Delano family. Prior to the American Civil War, Delano was a National Republican and then a Whig; as a Whig he was identified with the faction of the party that opposed the spread of slavery into the Western territories, and he became a Republican when the party was founded as the major anti-slavery party after the demise of the Whigs in the 1850s. During Reconstruction Delano advocated federal protection of African-Americans' civil rights, and argued that the former Confederate states should be administered by the federal government, but were not part of the United States until they met the requirements for readmission to the Union.

Delano served as President Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of the Interior during a time of rapid Westward expansionism, and contended with conflicts between Native tribes (First Nations) and European settlers. He was instrumental in the establishment of America's first national park, supervising the first U.S. federally funded exploratory scientific expedition into Yellowstone in 1871, and becoming America's first national park overseer in 1872. “C.Delano Secretary of the interior  May 28, 1872”

 

George Sewall Boutwell (January 28, 1818 – February 27, 1905) was an American politician, lawyer, and statesman from Massachusetts. He served as Secretary of the Treasury under U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant, the 20th Governor of Massachusetts, a Senator and Representative from Massachusetts and the first Commissioner of Internal Revenue under U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. He was a leader in the impeachment of U.S. President Andrew Johnson. signed in purple ink "George S. Boutwell Secretary of Treasury" . Signature has partially bled into paper with the purple ink.

 

Benjamin Helm Bristow (June 20, 1832 – June 22, 1896) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 30th U.S. Treasury Secretary and the first Solicitor General. Signed and inscribed” B. H. Bristow Solicitor General. May 28, 1872”

Lewis Tappan (May 23, 1788 – June 21, 1873) was a New York abolitionist who worked to achieve freedom for the enslaved Africans aboard the Amistad. Tappan was also among the founders of the American Missionary Association in 1846, which began more than 100 anti-slavery Congregational churches throughout the Midwest, and after the American Civil War, founded numerous schools and colleges to aid in the education of freedmen.. Edward Beecher D.D. (August 27, 1803 – July 28, 1895) was an American theologian, the son of Lyman Beecher and the brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe and Henry Ward Beecher. AQS Religious quote

Catharine Esther Beecher (September 6, 1800 – May 12, 1878) was an American educator known for her forthright opinions on female education as well as her vehement support of the many benefits of the incorporation of kindergarten into children's education. Salmon Portland Chase (January 13, 1808 – May 7, 1873) was a U.S. politician and jurist who served as the sixth Chief Justice of the United States. He also served as the 23rd Governor of Ohio, represented Ohio in the United States Senate, and served as the 25th United States Secretary of the Treasury. Richard Henry Dana Jr. (August 1, 1815 – January 6, 1882) was an American lawyer and politician from Massachusetts, a descendant of a colonial family, who gained renown as the author ofA vintage printed photograph of "Ulysses S.
