Autographed note and portrait engraving, the note signed by Browning and dated October 31, 1884, with his famous quote: “When is man strong until he feels alone? Colombe’s Birthday.”. The engraved portrait is signed in pencil at the lower right by Samuel Hollyer, the engraver. Matted together 21 x 12 inches.
Robert Browning (7 May 1812 – 12 December 1889) was an English poet and playwright whose dramatic monologues put him high among the Victorian poets. He was noted for irony, characterization, dark humour, social commentary, historical settings and challenging vocabulary and syntax.
