Original Albumen Print of Black Hills Expedition. The Black Hills Expedition was a United States Army expedition in 1874 led by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer. Photographed by W.H. Illingworth, St. Paul , Minn. 7 1/2 X 9 1/4 inches.When the expedition traveled, it stretched out for nearly two miles with 2,100 horses, 110 wagons driven by more than a thousand soldiers and teamsters. The expedition became the most photographed undertaking in history, with daily activities recorded by an English photographer, William Illingworth. Rare to find this large size cabinet card which shows areas of the photo that are not found in the smaller format photos.
