COOLIDGE, CALVIN. ALS on White House letterhead dated January 10, 1929,Washington, 8.75" x 7", Extremely Fine. to Hon. E. G. Buckland, Chairman of the Board of the New Haven Railroad system. He congratulates Buckland on the official recognition by the company of the duties he has so long performed so well. He adds, “I hope you will keep my son at work and that his presence will not be a disturbing element.

To "Hon E.G Buckland" of New Haven, Conn.: "If it is not too late I wish to offer my congratulations on the official recognition by the Company of the duties you have so long performed so well. I am sure everyone interested in the success and well-being of the railroads of New England will rejoice. I hope you will keep my son at work and that his presence will not be a disturbing element. Yours/Calvin Coolidge". As a Senator from Massachusetts Coolidge had served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Railroads. He helped pass legislation that restricted railroads to some extent, but also gave them favors to offset those restrictions. He supported the "full crew" bill which endeared him to train workers. In 1932. after leaving public office, he agreed to serve on the National Transportation Committee. This group was to make recommendations to the nation on how best to meet the problems of the transportation industry. The letter has one horizontal fold and light browning. Coolidge's script and signature are clear.
