This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/8/2021
The leaf is contained in the “Author’s Autograph Edition” of Irving’s Works, G.P. Putams Sons, 1895. The edition was published in 40 volumes, with the first volume, Alhambra, containing the manuscript leaf. Often, as here, tis single volume is found separately because of that leaf. There were 500 copies in this edition
Here we have a single manuscript leaf, with 26 lines, from a few pages into CHAPTER XIX Founding of the city of Isabella (from Irving’s Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus). The leaf has several markups, is overall darkened, and has become detached from the corners where it was affixed to the page. There are also several old tape repairs to the verso. The copy of Alhambra is inconsequential, being an ex-library buchram binding with fairly uniform dampstaining to the edges of the textblock.
Original manuscript leaf from Washington Irving’s The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus.
