Two Exquisite Works by one of the Masters of Impressionism. Period: Circa 1870-1880

Provenance: These drawings are notable pieces from the prestigious Anson Goodyear collection. Anson Goodyear, the founding President of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), was a renowned philanthropist and collector. His collection, which included masterpieces by Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, and Paul Gauguin, was highly valued, especially notable was Gauguin's "Spirit of the Dead Watching." These particular drawings by Pissarro were once exhibited at MoMA, on loan from Goodyear’s esteemed collection.

Description of Artworks:

Woman Hanging Clothes: This piece, executed in ink and watercolor wash, measures 8.5” x 6.5”. It shows slight toning around the edges due to previous framing. The drawing, attached at the top two corners onto the mat, bears the signature initials “C.P.” in the lower left. The back of the drawing features the number 15279 and an original MoMA loan sticker with the inscription “Museum of Modern Art LOAN 74, Goodyear.”

Woman in Full Outfit: This charcoal drawing with a wash is a detailed study of a woman, measuring 8.5” x 7”. It exhibits the same toning and attachment method as the first. The artist’s initials “C.P.” are found in the lower right. The back of this drawing carries the number 15276, along with a similar MoMA loan sticker.

Artistic Significance: Camille Pissarro, a Danish-French Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painter, is celebrated for his contributions to both Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Born in the Danish West Indies (now the US Virgin Islands), Pissarro had a unique perspective that enriched his portrayal of peasant life. His works from around 1880, including series of peasant men and women, showcase his ability to depict his subjects with authentic simplicity and elegance. These drawings, representing laundresses and peasant girls, are exemplary of his mastery and are considered true masterpieces in the Impressionist canon.
