This lot consists of an etching of Mark Twain in bed, a fine Mark Twain signature on card, and a printed note related to the loss of his wife signed by Samuel Clemens. The letter is 4.5" x 7", Florence [Italy], June 1904. Printed on black-bordered mourning paper, the author gives a word of thanks following the death of his wife, Olivia Langdon Clemens, in part: "If I could, I would thank with my own hand . . . each friend who has remembered me and mine . . . in this heavy time, but I am not able to do it. Therefore I get that this general acknowledgment may be accepted as a token of the gratitude . . . which is in my heart." Samuel l. Clemens. Mark Twain was the pseudonym or writing name of Samuel Clemens (1835 - 1910), famed American author and humorist, and the signature of Mark Twain on card is bold and highly legible. The signature of S Clemens is visible, but fainter, on the typed note dated 1904. The etching is 4 1/2 x 5 3/8 inches, the signed card is 1 3/4 x 3 inches wide, and the typed note is 6 1/4 x 3 1/2 inches wide.
