(1745 - 1796) "Mad Anthony", an American Revolutionary brigadier general who distinguished himself at Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, and in the brilliant capture of the British garrison at Stony Point.

Good content manuscript A.D.S. "Ant'y Wayne", 1p. 4to., Philadelphia, Nov. 27, 1787. In part: "We the undersigned Officers of the late Army of the United States beg leave to recommend Captain Blackall Wm. Ball as a suitable person to take the Command of a Company in the Corps about to be raised in the Commonwealth..." Boldly signed by Wayne at the bottom. Also signed by four others, including Lt. Col. THOMAS HARTLEY who commanded the 1st Pa. Brigade at Brandywine and Germantown and led an expedition to avenge the Wyoming Massacre, WILLIAM MACPHERSON who served as a 2nd Lieut. in Miles' Pa. Rifle Regiment, captured at Long Island and later serving as an aide to Benjamin Lincoln; FRANCIS JOHNSTON who served as a colonel in the 5th Pa., and WILLIAM WILSON who served as captain.

A fine association of important Revolutionary War officers expertly inlaid and in very good condition.
