Rare, Original DS for Nathaniel Goodwin From John Hancock. Signed, Sealed and Dated 1781. The Letter States that John Hancock Appointed Nathaniel Goodwin as Brigadier General of the Militia. The latter is Framed Under Glass with a Print of John Hancock as Well as a Print of Hancock House. Toning and Foxing, and some tears not examined out of frame. Hard to find any Hancock appointments for this high of a rank.General Goodwin was a Revolutionary War brigadier general in Massachusetts Militia in charge of enlistments for the Army in his state. Among them were 28 African Americans. On the surrender of Burgoyne and his men, Goodwin was placed in command of the guard over them at Somerville. Burgoyne's sword fell into his possession. He authored two books: List of Revolutionary Soldiers and New England Early Settlers.
