American writer and United States Secretary of the Navy (1778–1860); as a member of the 'Knickerbocker Group,' he co-wrote the satirical periodical Salmagundi with Washington Irving, an issue of which, from November 11, 1807, first attached the name 'Gotham' to New York City. ALS signed “J. K. Paulding,” four pages on two sheets, 7.25 x 9, April 19, 1835. Letter to Thomas W. White, in part: "Of all the states of the Union, Old Virginia, is the one which I consider the great network of constitutional principles. It is there that my observation has convinced me they are best understood & protected, and there that I look for the great security for their preservation, and it gives much satisfaction to think that all her great points of opinion and policy, as such as I myself think more devoutly every day." Addressed on the reverse of the second page in Paulding's own hand. In very good to fine condition, with splitting along intersecting folds (some repaired with old clear tape), and seal-related paper loss to the second page.
