BUCHANAN, JAMES. A unique piece in that the same sheet of paper contains an early ALS and a presidential ANS. First there is a warm letter to John E. Norris Esquire dated Dec. 6, 1852. Full page. He won’t be able to attend the dinner because he is making arrangements to visit New Orleans. He is under obligation for Norris’ support and friendship and will be most willing to repay should the opportunity offer. He is grateful for the support of his numerous devoted friends throughout the Gibraltar of Democracy in Virginia. On the verso President Buchanan has written this note. “Mr. Norris worked as a clerk in the State Department when I was Secretary and I was much pleased with him both 6 as a clerk and a gentleman. I entertain for him a warm and grateful regard as the within letter indicates. James Buchanan 3 June 1857.”

With a Scott Kiefer print of Wheatland, Buchanan’s home in Lancaster, Pa.

The lot also contains Buchanan’s copy of Polk’s1845 Message to Congress. Buchanan’s name is on the flyleaf, but it is not his signature. It is signed by John R. Eadie, who was a Whig Congressman from Pennsylvania and a Colonel in the Civil War. The book is handsomely bound.
