This is a fascinating Handwritten and signed letter by James Buchanan dated Wheatland, Near Lancaster 17 July 1851. The letter is to a Thomas J. McCamant. In the letter he states in part how his niece will be his companion to Wyoming and that he is "gratified to learn the favorable opinion of Mr. Hughes entertains for me personally. On my part this cordially reciprocated. He well deserves the high estimation in which he is held. I regret that he is not my friend politically; but his preference for another does not diminish my regard. I shall visit Pottsville as a private citizen, without the intention of making political capital i shall be happy to receive his personal civilities, as well as your own. With Many thoughts of your kindness, I remain very Respectively your friend James Buchanan"

James Buchanan Jr. (April 23, 1791 – June 1, 1868) was an American lawyer, diplomat, and politician who served as the 15th president of the United States from 1857 to 1861. He previously served as secretary of state from 1845 to 1849 and represented Pennsylvania in both houses of the U.S. Congress. He was an advocate for states' rights, particularly regarding slavery, and minimized the role of the federal government preceding the Civil War.
