This is an ALS by Francis William Newman and a circular by the  London Hungarian Committee from 1849.

In the letter, Newman is trying to drum up support in Bristol England and declares the value of the cause to fight for Hungary's independence.

The letter reads in full :

7 Park Village East, Regents Park, London, September 10/49

My dear Livett.

I am strongly impressed with the belief both that England has acted a part of cowardly selfishness towards the Hungarians, and that it is not too late to do something by petitions (for Lord Palmerston says that he wants to be ?presed), that I venture to send the enclosed papers to you in hopes of getting a petition from Bristol. If you know anyone in Bristol, who is leisure of active principles and would enable him to circulate similar papers, I would kindly Furnish me with his address and say what number that are wanted. I have no doubt that the Hung. committee will supply them but time is very precious. We are quite well and hope the same and believe me ever cordial remembrances from Francis W Newman.

The Circular Reads:

LONDON HUNGARIAN COMMITTEE,

London, September 7th, 1849.

SIR,

We have been requested by a number of gentlemen in London, taking a warm interest in the Hungarian Cause, to call your attention to the accompanying Memorial. It has already been adopted at several Public Meetings, and it is of the highest importance to the Cause (whether the late disastrous intelligence from Hungary be fully confirmed or not) that this or some similar Memorial should be adopted as widely as possible throughout the country. It is scarcely necessary to say that promptness and unanimity in the expression of public opinion are highly important.

You will observe that, in this Memorial, care is taken to express an unshaken opinion in the full Justice and Right of the Hungarian Struggle, in order to prevent the possibility of misapprehension; while it is sought to let Austria and Russia see that, in the hour of Hungary's reverses, and when her national existence and liberties appear to be in danger of extinction, England does not cease to raise her voice on behalf of that gallant Nation; and that we still strive to secure for her a practical and permanent good, though for the time the acknowledgment of her independence should be delayed.

We remain, Sir,

Yours Respectfully,

DUDLEY COUTTS STUART, RICHARD TAYLOR.
