This letter was written and signed by Longfellow to Elizur Wright Jr., who,was advocate Abolitionist and Inventor and author. The letter Thanks Wright for his help and that he is happy to hear about Wright’s success in Albany and hope it will be greater in Washington. Also, Longfellow writes that “and trust that many pieces in my forth coming volume will please you as much”.The letter has been silked on reverse, due to sepration at folds which does go through areas of text and his signature. Still quite legible and fair condition.
Wright published and attempted to sell his own translation of the French writer La Fontaine which brought Wright into contact with many of the celebrated literati of the day and took him to England in 1846. Back in the United States, he founded a successful antislavery, antitariff newspaper. He became interested in the reform of life insurance then beginning in England; meanwhile, old interests in mathematics and statistics drew him to what was to be his chief field of endeavor. He is sometimes described as the "father of life insurance" in the United States. He is also sometimes called the "father of insurance regulation", as he campaigned that life insurance companies must keep reserves, provide surrender values, and served as an insurance commissioner for the State of Massachusetts.
