Franklin Pierce and Jefferson Davis: DS by our 14th President and the man who became president of the Confederacy. Davis signed this as Secretary of War. The document, dated July 11, 1856 appoints Nathaniel Michler First Lieutenant in the Corps of Topographical Engineers. With white paper seal. Michler, who was brevetted Brigadier General for his service in the Civil War, was in charge of surveys for what later became the Panama Canal.
