A Florence Nightingale 1820 - 1910 embroidered bookmark by her. Provenance: The Max Thorek collection then the personal collection of Dr. J. K. Lattimer.

Incredibly rare piece, we can find no other pieces that were sewn by Florence Nightengale, known for founding what is considered modern nursing. This bookmark was made during the Crimean War.

Book Mark worked by her for G(eorge) A. Henty. Silk embroidery on pierced paper, 1¼×4¼ in., on pink silk ribbons, 12 in. With authentication. The secretary to the novelist sent the bookmark to a friend in 1927, with a note telling how Miss Nightingale had done the work during the Crimean War, where she had met both Henty and his brother Frederick, who died there of cholera. The same G. A. Henty

appears in the center of the mark, with silk embroidered flowers at either end. Comes with a custom-made bookcase for The Max Thorek collection.

Florence Nightingale (12 May 1820 – 13 August 1910) was an English social reformer, statistician and the founder of modern nursing. Nightingale came to prominence while serving as a manager and trainer of nurses during the Crimean War, in which she organized care for wounded soldiers at Constantinople. She significantly reduced death rates by improving hygiene and living standards. Nightingale gave nursing a favorable reputation and became an icon of Victorian culture, especially in the persona of "The Lady with the Lamp" making rounds of wounded soldiers at night.
