Ethan Allen signed May 1773 document selling 17 acres of woodland in Cornwall, Connecticut, inherited from his father, Joseph Allen, to Samuel Whitmore of Salisbury, Litchfield County, Connecticut. Interestingly, for the transaction, Allen lists himself as “of Poultney in Charlotte County and Province of New York.” The town, of course, became part of Vermont and counted Allen’s cousin Ebenezer Allen as one of its founders. Ethan Allen (January 21, 1738 – February 12, 1789) was an American farmer, businessman, land speculator, philosopher, writer, lay theologian, American Revolutionary War patriot, and politician. He is best known as one of the founders of Vermont and for the capture of Fort Ticonderoga early in the Revolutionary War. He was captured during the invasion of Quebec in 1775, exchanged in 1778, and given a brevet to Colonel, but did not see field service thereafter. He was heavily involved in the New Hampshire land grants of the 1760s and struggles with New York over the territory lasting into its time as an independent republic starting in 1777 until its statehood in 1791.
Document reads: No all men by these presents, that I Ethan Allen of Poultney in Charlotte county and province of New York for the consideration of 5 pounds, lawful money, already received to my full satisfaction of Samuel Whitmore of Salisbury, in the county of Litchfield, and colony of Connecticut, the receipt where of I do hereby acknowledge do therefore give grant bargain sell alien and convey unto the said, Samuel Whitmore, 17 acres of Woodland, which was distributed to me by the distributors of the estate of my honored father Joseph Allen, deceased and is situate in Cornwall about a mile and a half north of the meeting house and joins westerly on sr Whitmores land, which was distributed to my brother Ira Allen since deed to said Whitmore and bounding on all other points on common and undivided land to have and to hold the said, bargained and released premise, is with the privileges of opportunities there of unto him, this said, Sam Whitmore, his hears, and Assigned to his and their own proper use benefit and behold forever and furthermore this said Ethan Allen to covenant and agree with the said, sr Whitmore’s land, that I am well seized of the a good indefeasible estate in fee, simple and have good right to bargain and sell the same in manner and form above written, and that the same is free of all encumbrances whatsoever, and furthermore, The said, Ethan Allen do bind myself my hairs executors And administrators to warrant and defend the said, released premise from all claims and demands what ever in witness where I have here unto set my hand and seal this third day of May 1773, and in the 13th year of his majesty reign, signed, sealed and delivered and presents Thomas Chinman, George Marth, Ethan Allen, Litchford county to Salisbury third day of May 1773 personally appeared Ethan Allen signer and sealer to the foregoing instrument and acknowledge the same to be free act on deed before me and then it says justice of the peace, and then Ethan Allen Also document is docketed and signed once again by Ethan Allen dated May 28, 1773
