Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Virginia (1736–1797). Third-person ALS, one page, 7x 9., no date (but docketed September 2, 1788).

AL, 2 Sept. 1788, docketed on verso as being from Carter Braxton. Braxton signed the Declaration of Independence as a representative from Virginia. This letter is all written by Braxton in his hand and is signed multiple times in the third person, once as CB. three times as Mr. B and once as Mr. Braxton. the letter was trimmed at the top, otherwise in fine condition. Braxton was a wealthy Virginian landowner who owned 12,000 acres of land and 165 slaves for the cultivation of tobacco. In 1775 he was appointed to the Continental Congress and signed the Declaration of Independence but was sent home when he challenged Adams' democratic ideas. When the Revolutionary War broke out, the Americans expelled British merchants. For Braxton, this presented a high-risk opportunity to trade items internationally. He had to deal with the French and other countries, which is related in this ledger book page where he is trying to work a dispute with a French merchant, but does not know the language.
