Abraham Lincoln
Partially engraved military appointment on vellum with portions accomplished in manuscript, appointing Butler Fitch as an Assistant Paymaster, effective from December 12, 1864. Signed in full by the President "Abraham Lincoln" and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, dated February 22, 1865. 19 x 15 1/4 inches (48 x 38 cm); blue wafer seal of the War Office at left (with one small chip), and War Department docketing notations at upper left. Originally folded in sixths leaving light creases (as usual), some rubbing to the document Stanton's signature faded to brown, Lincoln's still quite strong, matted and framed.
