Rare important medical work(Botanical Illustration, Medicine), inscribed by the author to the famous commander of the USS Constitution, Commodore William Bainbridge. Barton, William P.C., Presentation Copy, Vegetable Materia Medica of the United States; or Medical Botany, Philadelphia: Matthew Carey & Son, 1817, first edition, two volumes, original boards, with forty-nine hand-colored engravings and inscribed "To Commodore Bainbridge with the respects of the author, April 4, 1822," 4to, (wear to bindings, some minor offset and spotting)FIRST EDITION. One of the first botanical works with colored plates published in the United States. This is the only presentation copy by the author that we can find that has come to market in the last 30 years. This edition was inscribed by the author By Dr. Barton who was a surgeon in the US Navy and at the Hospital for the Marines in the Navy yard in Philadelphia to Commodore (William) Bainbridge (May 7, 1774 – July 27, 1833) Commodore in the United States Navy. During Bainbridge's long career in the young American Navy he served under six presidents beginning with John Adams and is notable for his many victories at sea. He commanded several famous naval ships, including the USS Constitution and saw service in the Barbary Wars and the War of 1812. Bainbridge was also in command of the USS Philadelphia when it grounded off the shores of Tripoli in North Africa, resulting in his capture and imprisonment for many months. In the latter part of his career he became the U.S. Naval Commissioner.
